Background
BJJ Mat IQ Philosophy
Every match tells a story. Whether you win or lose, there are patterns, decisions, and technical moments that shape the outcome. My goal is to break down each match in a way that helps athletes understand what happened, why it happened, and how to improve next time. This method is the foundation behind Mat IQ — a structured approach to learning from every roll.
Meet the Coach Behind BJJ Mat IQ
Founded by Brandon Gomez a BJJ Blackbelt with 15+ years of experience, active practitioner and coach. I take great pride in helping the next generation of BJJ competitors find success and accomplishment within themselves. I use a systematic approach to breaking down matches into patterns, common movements and missed opportunities.
Why I Build the System
I built Mat IQ because I kept seeing the same problem over and over — athletes were training hard, but not always training smart. Most people roll, sweat, and grind, but they don’t always understand why they’re getting stuck, where their weaknesses are, or how to fix the patterns that keep showing up in their matches.
As a coach, I’ve watched students lose the same positions, repeat the same mistakes, and feel frustrated because they didn’t have a clear way to track their progress. I wanted to change that.
Mat IQ gives athletes a simple, structured, and data‑driven way to understand their game. Instead of guessing, you get clarity. Instead of repeating mistakes, you get a plan. Instead of feeling lost, you know exactly what to work on.
This system comes from years of coaching, analyzing matches, and helping athletes grow — from kids to competitors. My goal is to make improvement accessible, organized, and purposeful for every BJJ practitioner.
